Do you qualify?

Machine learning engineering and data science are shortage occupations in Germany under ISCO-08 group 25 (ICT professionals). Nigerian ML engineers with a recognised university degree in computer science, statistics, or mathematics qualify at the lower salary threshold. The IT specialist exception may also apply with 3+ years of ML engineering experience.

To qualify, you need all three:

  1. A job offer in Germany with a contract of at least 6 months
  2. A gross annual salary of at least €45,934.20 (2026 shortage threshold)
  3. A recognised university degree or at least 3 years of ML/data science experience in the last 7 years

B.Sc. vs HND: a critical distinction

B.Sc. Computer Science / B.Sc. Statistics / B.Sc. Mathematics / B.Eng. Computer Engineering (4–5 years) — these are university degrees at ISCED level 6 and can qualify if your institution is H+ in anabin.

HND from a Nigerian polytechnic — does not qualify. HND is below ISCED level 6. HND holders cannot use Route 1. Route 2 may be available if your ML experience is demonstrably at graduate-engineer level, but the bar is high.

Which degrees qualify for ML engineering roles?

Unlike software engineering, ML engineering frequently involves graduates in statistics, mathematics, and physics — not only computer science. Germany's Blue Card rules accept any recognised degree that is "related to" the offered position. A B.Sc. Statistics from a recognised Nigerian university applying for a data scientist or ML engineer role is generally accepted.

Qualifying Nigerian degrees for ML roles include:

  • B.Sc. Computer Science (4–5 years)
  • B.Sc. Statistics (4 years)
  • B.Sc. Mathematics (4 years)
  • B.Sc. Physics / Applied Physics with strong CS component
  • B.Eng. Computer Engineering (4–5 years)

Check your institution at anabin.kmk.org. Notable Nigerian universities with Statistics and Mathematics programmes listed in anabin: University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Obafemi Awolowo University, and Ahmadu Bello University.

Salary threshold (2026)

Category2026 minimum gross salary
ML / AI engineer (shortage occupation — ISCO-08 group 25)€45,934.20 / year
All other professions (general threshold)€50,700 / year
IT specialist without a degree (§ 18g(2))€45,934.20 / year

Two routes to the Blue Card

Route 1: University degree

Your B.Sc. (CS, Statistics, Mathematics) or B.Eng. (Computer Engineering) qualifies if the institution is H+ in anabin and the programme is listed as "entspricht". The degree must be related to the ML/AI role offered.

Route 2: IT specialist without a degree (§ 18g(2))

At least 3 years of ML/data science experience at graduate level within the last 7 years, in an ISCO-08 group 25 role. Experience should demonstrate production ML systems — model training, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring — not data entry, reporting, or basic analytics.

Document checklist (Nigeria → Germany, 2026)

For Route 1 (with degree):

  • Valid passport (2+ empty pages)
  • Degree certificate — with apostille (required since 24 September 2024)
  • Academic transcript (all semesters) — with apostille
  • NYSC Discharge Certificate or exemption certificate
  • University confirmation of regular (on-site) mode of study
  • anabin printout — or ZAB Statement of Comparability if programme is unlisted
  • Employment Declaration (Erklärung zum Beschäftigungsverhältnis) completed by your German employer

For Route 2 (IT exception):

  • Experience letters: specific ML technologies (PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, Hugging Face, MLflow, Spark, SQL, Python), model types developed, production systems owned, seniority level
  • Payslips and Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC) for each employment period

Apostille note: Nigeria joined the Hague Apostille Convention on 24 September 2024. Academic documents require apostille. Confirm current requirements with the German Embassy Abuja or Consulate General Lagos.

After approval: settlement permit timeline

  • 21 months of Blue Card employment + German at B1 → settlement permit
  • 27 months of Blue Card employment + German at A1 → settlement permit

Your spouse has full work rights in Germany from day one.

Common mistakes

1. Assuming only a CS degree qualifies. Statistics and mathematics degrees are explicitly accepted for ML and data science roles. If you have a B.Sc. Statistics from UI or ABU, do not assume you need additional recognition steps — check anabin for your specific institution.

2. Missing NYSC documentation. German missions frequently request the NYSC Discharge Certificate as supporting evidence. Include it regardless of whether it is on the official checklist.

3. Degree documents without apostille. Since 24 September 2024, Nigerian academic documents require apostille for German visa applications.

Frequently asked questions

Does a B.Sc. Statistics qualify for an ML engineer Blue Card?

Yes — if your university is H+ in anabin and the programme is listed as "entspricht" or "gleichwertig", and the ML engineering role is directly related to your statistics/quantitative background. Statistics and mathematics are accepted qualifying fields for data science and ML positions.

What if my ML work has been primarily in analytics rather than model engineering?

Route 1 (degree) is unaffected by the nature of the work — you qualify based on the degree and job offer. For Route 2 (no degree), analytics-only experience is less likely to satisfy the "university-graduate level IT work" requirement. Data engineering or MLOps experience is stronger for Route 2 than pure BI reporting.
