Apostille — the most important thing to know
India joined the Hague Convention on Apostille in 2005, but the German government does not require or accept MEA apostille on Indian documents for Blue Card applications. The German missions in India process original documents with notarized translations only. Do not pay for apostille on your degree certificate, mark sheets, or experience letters — it is wasted money and does not speed up processing.
This applies to all four German missions in India (Embassy New Delhi, Consulate General Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata). The requirement is stated explicitly on the checklist published by the German missions in India.
Document checklist for Indian applicants
Identity documents
- Valid passport (must be valid for at least 6 months beyond intended stay)
- Biometric passport photo (35 × 45 mm, white background)
- Completed national visa application form (Antrag auf Erteilung eines nationalen Visums)
Job offer
- Signed employment contract or concrete job offer letter from your German employer
- Erklärung zum Beschäftigungsverhältnis form, completed and signed by the employer
- The offer must be for a position lasting at least 6 months
Degree and academic documents
- Original degree certificate (B.Tech / B.E. / M.Tech / MCA / B.Sc. / M.Sc.)
- All semester mark sheets (originals or attested copies from your university)
- Notarized English translation if any document is not already in English
- No apostille required. No attestation from MEA required.
If your university is rated H+/- in anabin, or your specific degree programme is not listed, obtain a ZAB Statement of Comparability (Zeugnisbewertung) before your visa appointment. Processing takes approximately 2 weeks when a German work contract is attached to the application.
Salary and employment documents
- Form 16 for the last 2 financial years (issued by your current employer)
- Last 3 months of payslips
- Optional: employer letter on letterhead confirming current CTC and role
The consulate reviews your current Indian salary to verify that the German offer is genuine and reflects a qualifying role. You are not required to meet a minimum current salary — this is a verification step only.
Financial proof
- Last 3–6 months of bank statements (savings and current accounts)
- No Sperrkonto required — the Blue Card salary itself demonstrates financial sufficiency
German missions in India
| Mission | States covered |
|---|---|
| Embassy New Delhi | Delhi · Rajasthan · UP · Uttarakhand · Haryana · Punjab · HP · J&K · North-East |
| Consulate General Mumbai | Maharashtra · Gujarat · Goa · Madhya Pradesh · Chhattisgarh |
| Consulate General Chennai | Tamil Nadu · Andhra Pradesh · Telangana · Karnataka · Kerala |
| Consulate General Kolkata | West Bengal · Bihar · Jharkhand · Odisha |
Apply at the mission covering your place of residence in India, not where your employer is or where you were educated. Consulate General Chennai has historically had shorter wait times for appointment slots.
Processing times from India
Standard processing: 8–14 weeks from submission of complete documents to visa decision. This includes Federal Employment Agency (BA) approval, which is routinely granted for shortage occupations and does not require separate action from you.
Fast-track via § 81a Vorabzustimmung: approximately 4–6 weeks total. Your German employer initiates this procedure at their local Ausländerbehörde. The additional cost is €411 (to the Ausländerbehörde, paid by the employer). If your employer offers this option, it is worth taking.
Common mistakes for Indian applicants
- Paying for apostille. The single most common expensive mistake. German missions in India do not require apostille on any document. MEA apostille costs money and time — skip it entirely.
- Submitting only the employment contract. The consulate requires the Erklärung zum Beschäftigungsverhältnis form, completed by your German employer — in addition to the contract itself. Many applicants miss this.
- Assuming H+ automatically means the degree is accepted. If your university is H+ in anabin but your specific degree programme is not listed in the comments field, the consulate will ask for a ZAB certificate. Check anabin before your appointment.
- Missing mark sheets. India-issued degrees typically require all semester mark sheets, not just the final degree certificate. Missing even one semester will result in a return request.
When you need a lawyer
Most straightforward Blue Card applications from India do not require a lawyer. Consider one if:
- Your university is H+/- and your specific degree programme is unlisted in anabin
- You are applying via the IT exception (3 years experience, no degree) — assembling convincing experience documentation requires care
- You want to use the fast-track § 81a Vorabzustimmung and your employer needs guidance
- Your offer is from a startup with limited administrative capacity to complete the Erklärung form

Frequently asked questions
Do Indian applicants need an apostille for the EU Blue Card?
No. The German government explicitly does not require or accept MEA apostille on Indian documents for the Blue Card. Paying for apostille on degree certificates, mark sheets, or experience letters is wasted money. German missions in India process unapostilled originals with notarized translations.
Which German mission should I apply at in India?
You apply at the German mission covering your place of residence in India, not your employer's location. Embassy New Delhi covers Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Northeast India. Consulate General Mumbai covers Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. Consulate General Chennai covers Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Kerala. Consulate General Kolkata covers West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha.
What salary documents are required from Indian applicants?
The standard requirement is your most recent 3 months of payslips plus Form 16 for the last 2 financial years. Some missions also accept an employer letter on letterhead confirming current CTC. The consulate needs to verify that your new German salary is genuine — they compare the new offer against your current Indian salary.
How long does the Blue Card take from India?
Standard processing: 8–14 weeks from submission to visa decision at most German missions in India. With the fast-track § 81a Vorabzustimmung (initiated by your German employer), total time reduces to approximately 4–6 weeks. Consulate General Chennai has historically had shorter wait times than Embassy New Delhi.
Will my Indian degree be recognised for the EU Blue Card?
Most degrees from IITs, NITs, BITS Pilani, Anna University, Delhi University, Mumbai University, IISc Bangalore, and other major public universities are recognised (anabin H+). Check the anabin database to verify your specific university and degree. If your university is H+/- or your programme is not listed, obtain a ZAB Statement of Comparability (Zeugnisbewertung) before your visa appointment.
