Which one fits your situation?
You have a job offer with a qualifying salary
Blue CardFaster permanent residence, full spouse work rights from day one. No reason to choose the Chancenkarte if a Blue Card offer is in hand.
Run the Blue Card check →You don't have an offer and want to move now
ChancenkarteGetting into Germany first — to network, interview in person, and do trial employment — is the intended use case. Most Chancenkarte holders find a qualifying role within 6 months.
Run the Chancenkarte check →Your degree isn't fully recognised yet
Chancenkarte (points route)A partial equivalence decision from a German recognition authority gives you 4 points — usually enough to qualify without full recognition. The Blue Card requires a fully recognised degree (or 3 years IT experience).
Run the Chancenkarte check →Your offer is below the Blue Card salary threshold
Chancenkarte or skilled-worker permitIf the salary in the offer is below €45,934.20 (ICT, 2026), the Blue Card is not available. You may still qualify for a standard skilled-worker permit under § 18b or § 18c AufenthG. Run the check — the wizard will tell you.
Run the Chancenkarte check →You are 34 or younger with 2+ years of experience
Consider ChancenkarteYou collect 2 points for age under 35 and 2 points for 2+ years of experience — 4 points before language or degree. A basic language certificate gets you to 6. Chancenkarte may be the faster path if finding a German employer remotely is proving difficult.

Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between the EU Blue Card and the Chancenkarte?
The EU Blue Card requires a confirmed job offer in Germany before you apply. The Chancenkarte does not — it lets you move to Germany and search for work for up to 12 months. In exchange, the Blue Card gives you full-time work rights from day one and a faster path to permanent residence.
Can I switch from Chancenkarte to EU Blue Card?
Yes. Once you find a qualifying job offer while in Germany on the Chancenkarte, you convert to a Blue Card (or skilled-worker permit) at the local Ausländerbehörde without leaving Germany. No new visa application is required.
Which visa is better if my degree is not fully recognised?
The Chancenkarte is more flexible. If a German recognition authority has issued a partial equivalence decision, you receive 4 points — often enough to qualify without waiting for full recognition. The Blue Card requires a degree fully comparable to a German bachelor’s (ISCED level 6+).
Which visa is faster to get?
Both take 8–14 weeks in the standard process. With the fast-track § 81a Vorabzustimmung (available for both), total time drops to approximately 6 weeks. The Chancenkarte does not require a job offer, which removes employer negotiation time — so in practice it can be faster to start the application process.
Can my spouse work on the Chancenkarte?
Not during the job-search period. Accompanying family on the Chancenkarte do not have work rights while the primary applicant is still searching. Once the primary holder converts to a Blue Card, the spouse receives immediate work rights.
