Do you qualify?

SAP consulting is classified under ISCO-08 group 25 (ICT professionals) for technical SAP roles (ABAP development, Basis, architecture) and is a shortage occupation. Nigerian SAP consultants with a recognised university degree qualify at the lower salary threshold. The IT specialist exception applies for technical SAP roles with 3+ years of experience.

Functional SAP consultants (FI/CO, MM, SD, HR without significant ABAP) may fall under ISCO-08 group 242 (Management and Organisation Analysts) instead of group 25 — which has implications for both the salary threshold and the IT exception.

To qualify, you need all three:

  1. A job offer in Germany with a contract of at least 6 months
  2. A gross annual salary of at least €45,934.20 (shortage threshold, group 25) or €50,700 (general, group 242)
  3. A recognised university degree or, for technical roles only, at least 3 years of SAP experience in the last 7 years

B.Sc. vs HND: a critical distinction

B.Sc. Computer Science / B.Eng. Computer Engineering / B.Sc. Management Information Systems (4–5 years) — qualify if the institution is H+ in anabin.

HND from a Nigerian polytechnic — does not qualify. HND is below ISCED level 6. HND holders cannot use Route 1, and the IT exception (Route 2) is limited to technical SAP roles.

Technical vs functional SAP: which category applies?

Role typeISCO-08 groupSalary thresholdIT exception
ABAP developer / SAP Basis / SAP architectGroup 25€45,934.20Available (3 yrs exp)
Functional consultant (FI/CO, MM, SD, HR, PP) with ABAPGroup 25€45,934.20Available
Pure functional consultant (no ABAP, no technical development)Group 242€50,700Not available

If your SAP role is primarily configuration and business process design without programming, you likely fall under group 242. Your degree is still the qualification — the Blue Card is available — but the salary threshold is higher and the IT exception does not apply.

Which degrees qualify for SAP consultant roles?

For technical SAP roles (group 25):

  • B.Sc. Computer Science
  • B.Eng. Computer Engineering
  • B.Sc. Information Technology
  • B.Sc. Management Information Systems (programme must be H+ in anabin)

For functional SAP roles (group 242), business and management degrees are also accepted:

  • B.Sc. Accounting / B.Com / B.Sc. Economics (for FI/CO, MM roles)
  • B.Sc. Business Administration
  • B.Eng. Industrial Engineering (for PP/MM roles)

Check your institution at anabin.kmk.org.

  • University confirmation of regular (on-site) mode of study
  • anabin printout — or ZAB Statement of Comparability if unlisted
  • Employment Declaration (Erklärung zum Beschäftigungsverhältnis) from your German employer

After approval: settlement permit timeline

  • 21 months of Blue Card employment + German at B1 → settlement permit
  • 27 months of Blue Card employment + German at A1 → settlement permit

Common mistakes

1. Functional SAP consultant applying at the shortage threshold. If your role is primarily FI/CO or SD configuration without ABAP, you are likely ISCO-08 group 242, not 25. The applicable threshold is €50,700, not €45,934.20. Using the wrong threshold in your application creates a discrepancy the consulate will catch.

2. Assuming SAP certification substitutes for a degree. SAP certifications (SAP Certified Application Associate, SAP Certified Development Associate) demonstrate module knowledge but are not recognised qualifications under German immigration law. They support but do not replace the degree requirement.

3. Missing NYSC documentation. German missions often request the NYSC Discharge Certificate. Include it regardless of the official checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Does a B.Com degree qualify for the Blue Card as an SAP FI/CO consultant?

Yes — a B.Com (or B.Sc. Accounting / B.Sc. Economics) from an H+ university can qualify for an SAP FI/CO role under ISCO-08 group 242, provided the degree is listed in anabin as "entspricht" or "gleichwertig". The general salary threshold (€50,700) applies.

Can I use the IT exception if my SAP experience is in functional consulting?

No. The IT exception under § 18g(2) applies to ISCO-08 group 25 (ICT professionals). Pure functional SAP consulting falls under group 242 and does not qualify for the IT exception — a degree is required.

What if my SAP experience is both technical (ABAP) and functional (FI/CO)?

Mixed roles are typically classified by the dominant function. If you write ABAP, manage transports, and do some FI/CO configuration, your role is more likely classified as group 25. Make sure your experience letters describe the technical development scope clearly.
