Do you qualify?
Short answer: as an SAP consultant with a formal degree, you can likely qualify — via Route 1 if your degree is fully recognised, or the points system otherwise. Germany is SAP's home country and has the highest concentration of SAP roles globally — the Chancenkarte gives you 12 months to search on the ground.
The key constraint: the Chancenkarte requires a formal qualification. SAP certifications (SAP Certified Application Associate, etc.) do not substitute for a degree under German immigration law.
The Germany Opportunity Card lets you move to Germany without a job offer and search for SAP roles on the ground for up to 12 months. Once you have an offer, you convert to a EU Blue Card or work permit at the local Ausländerbehörde.
The Chancenkarte requires a formal qualification
To apply under either route, you must hold one of:
- A foreign higher-education degree (at least 3 years, ISCED level 6 or higher)
- A state-recognised vocational qualification of at least 2 years
- An AHK Category A certificate
SAP certifications do not qualify as formal qualifications for the Chancenkarte. They are vendor credentials. If you hold only SAP certifications and experience without a formal degree, the EU Blue Card IT exception (§ 18g(2)) is the correct pathway for technical SAP roles — but it requires a job offer first.
Which route applies to you?
| Your situation | Route |
|---|---|
| B.Tech / B.E. (CS, IT) from an H+ university | Route 1 — no points needed |
| MCA or MSc CS from H+ university, listed in anabin | Route 1 — no points needed |
| B.Com / BBA / MBA from H+ university, listed as "entspricht" | Route 1 — verify in anabin; ZAB recommended |
| Degree from H+/- university, programme not in anabin comments | Route 2 — 6 points required |
| No formal qualification | Not eligible for Chancenkarte |
Check your institution at anabin.kmk.org/anabin/institutionen.
Route 2: calculating your points
You need at least 6. Points are additive except where mutually exclusive.
| Criterion | Points | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Partial equivalence of your qualification with a German qualification | 4 | Requires a formal "partial equivalence" decision |
| Shortage occupation (technical SAP roles qualify) | 1 | ISCO-08 groups 133 and 25 |
| At least 2 years qualifying experience in last 5 years | 2 | Must be post-graduation and in your field |
| At least 5 years qualifying experience in last 7 years | 3 | Replaces the 2-year tier — mutually exclusive |
| German at A2 | 1 | |
| German at B1 | 2 | Replaces A2 — mutually exclusive |
| German at B2 or higher | 3 | Replaces B1 — mutually exclusive |
| English at C1 or native (with certificate) | 1 | Additive — stacks on top of German points |
| Age under 35 at date of application | 2 | Cut-off is fixed at date of application |
| Age 35–39 at date of application | 1 | Replaces under-35 tier — mutually exclusive |
| Prior lawful residence in Germany ≥ 6 months in last 5 years | 1 | Schengen tourist stays do not count |
| Spouse also qualifies for Chancenkarte and applies jointly | 1 |
Worked examples for Indian SAP consultants:
Profile A — B.Tech CS from H+/- university (programme unlisted), 4 years SAP ABAP development experience, age 28, English C1: 1 (shortage) + 2 (experience) + 2 (age) + 1 (English) = 6 points ✓
Profile B — MCA from H+/- university (unlisted), 5 years SAP S/4HANA + BTP experience, age 32, English C1: 1 (shortage) + 3 (5-year exp) + 2 (age under 35) + 1 (English) = 7 points ✓
Profile C — B.Com from H+ university (listed), ZAB confirms partial equivalence, 6 years SAP FI/CO experience, age 35, English C1: 4 (partial equiv) + 1 (shortage) + 3 (5-year exp) + 1 (age 35–39) + 1 (English) = 10 points ✓
Profile D — 3 years experience, age 43, no German, English B2 only: 1 (shortage) + 2 (experience) = 3 points — does not qualify. Needs German language study.
Note on German language for SAP roles: German at B1 or above adds 2–3 points and is highly valued by German employers for functional SAP roles. Investing in German before applying meaningfully improves both points and interview outcomes.
Financial requirement: the Sperrkonto
The 2026 binding monthly figure under § 20a(4) AufenthG is €1,091 net per month — for a 12-month Chancenkarte that means €13,092 available before your visa appointment.
The standard method is a Sperrkonto (blocked account). Common providers for Indian applicants: Fintiba, Coracle, Expatrio. A Verpflichtungserklärung from a Germany-resident sponsor replaces the Sperrkonto entirely.
What you can do on the Opportunity Card
- Part-time employment: up to 20 hours per week on average
- Trial employment (Probebeschäftigung): up to 2 weeks per employer
- Freelancing: not permitted under the Chancenkarte
- Interviews and technical assessments: not regulated — participate freely
Documenting SAP experience for the points claim
Experience letters should include:
- Job title and employment dates
- Specific SAP modules and technologies: SAP S/4HANA, SAP ECC, SAP BTP, ABAP OO, Fiori/UI5, SAP Integration Suite, SAP HANA, SAP Basis, SAP PI/PO, SAP Analytics Cloud, SuccessFactors, SAP FI/CO, MM, SD, HCM, PP — whichever apply
- Description of responsibilities — technical: development, integration, Basis administration; functional: configuration, blueprint, go-live support
- Project scope: client industry, team size, go-live delivered
- Seniority level
Supplement with salary slips or Form 16. Project delivery letters from clients can strengthen the application.

- Degree certificate (B.Tech, B.Com, MCA, MBA, etc.)
- Mark sheets for every semester
- University confirmation of regular (on-site) mode of study

- Experience letters per the documentation notes above, plus salary slips or Form 16

Apostille note: Germany does not require or accept apostille on Indian documents.
Frequently asked questions
I have a B.Com degree and 8 years of SAP FI/CO experience — can I apply?
Possibly via Route 2. A B.Com from an H+ university may qualify as a recognised foreign qualification. Obtain a ZAB Statement of Comparability before applying — if the ZAB returns a partial-equivalence outcome, that unlocks 4 additional points, making Route 2 very achievable. If the ZAB recognises full equivalence and your institution is H+, you may qualify for Route 1.
Do SAP certifications count toward the Chancenkarte?
No. SAP certifications are vendor credentials and do not qualify as formal degrees or state-recognised vocational qualifications. They have no direct role in the Chancenkarte qualification routes, though they can strengthen experience letters.
Does German language help for SAP roles in Germany?
Yes, more than for most tech roles. Many German companies run their SAP functional implementations in German. German at B1 or above adds 2–3 points toward the Chancenkarte and makes you significantly more competitive for functional SAP roles. Even A2 adds 1 point and signals commitment.
How long does the Chancenkarte take to process for Indian applicants?
The Auswärtiges Amt publishes a minimum of 4 weeks. At Indian missions (New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru), processing currently ranges from 6 to 16 weeks.
